Workday for Managers
You can view data on your team, including individual employees’ work information, time off accruals, and more, and manage staff in Workday.
New in Workday: if you are a manager you may be managing multiple Supervisory Organizations. For example, you may manage an organization for staff and a separate organization for students.
Supervisory Organizations are logical groupings of employees (in the form of a hierarchy) who report to the same manager. Your Supervisory Organization may have the same makeup as your department.

Supervisory organizations are defined by the Staffing Model.
Staffing Models determine how jobs are defined and filled, provide different levels of control over staffing, and support different staffing goals.
In Workday, every Supervisory Organization must be associated with a Staffing Model by either directly assigning the Staffing Model to the organization or allowing the model to default from the superior organization.
Position Management Staffing Model
Position Management is the Workday Staffing Model that allows for the tracking of unfilled, filled, closed, and frozen positions.
Position Management is required for the following employee types/subtypes:
- All staff including regular, fixed term, and temporary
- Faculty who are, or will be, hired via a competitive recruitment
Job Management Staffing Model
Job Management is the Workday Staffing Model that provides the most flexibility in hiring because it removes the concept of a permanent position and instead relies on staffing workflow and approvals to control the number of workers in a Supervisory Organization.
In Job Management, a worker is hired into a job thereby filling a “seat”; however, when the worker leaves the “seat” disappears. As such, the existence of the seat is dependent on there being an identified incumbent.
Job Management is required for the following employee types/subtypes:
- Faculty who are not hired with a competitive recruitment, including part-time lecturers, annual lecturers, senior fellows, and visiting faculty.
- All students
- Contingent Workers
In the world of Workday, your department administrators have new Support Roles to better help you.
Support Roles are assigned to Supervisory Organizations. Each role has particular responsibilities and visibility in Workday. Individuals can have more than one role.
An administrator may have multiple Security Groups to allow them to support different roles. Security Groups enable what an administrator can do, what they can see, and where they can do/see it.
