Form I-9 and Changes to Washington State Driver’s License

August 8, 2018

As part of the implementation of the federal REAL ID Act, the Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) last month began indicating “Federal Limits Apply” on standard driver licenses and identification cards. This marking designates that the driver license or ID card cannot be used for certain purposes (eg, boarding a plane).

I-9 Coordinators: Please note that standard driver licenses and ID cards marked with “Federal Limits Apply” are still considered valid proof of identify for the Form I-9.

Additionally, beginning September 4, 2018, the DOL is also implementing a change to the driver license number format. Current card holders will receive a new number the next time they renew their cards. I-9 Coordinators, then, may see the “old” format and the “new” format concurrently while both numbering systems are in circulation.

You can find more information about the updates to the Washington State issued driver licenses and ID cards on the Washington State DOL blog or website.
